What Are “Super Sites” in the Colosseum Archaeological Park?

A large ancient amphitheater, the Colosseum, stands prominently under a vibrant blue sky scattered with clouds. If you’ve been looking at Colosseum tickets, you’ve probably come across the term “Super Sites.” Some tickets include them, others don’t, and yet finding a clear explanation of what they actually are can feel impossible.

When I first tried to book my own Colosseum ticket, I couldn’t figure it out either. The official websites mention them briefly, but the information is scattered, confusing, and sometimes outdated. So here’s a simple breakdown.

What Are Super Sites?

Officially, the Colosseum Archaeological Park describes Super Sites as curated additions included in certain premium tickets (like the Full Experience or the Forum Pass SUPER).

In plain words: they’re special areas inside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill that go beyond the standard routes. Think of them as “bonus” stops — smaller, but packed with history and often with modern multimedia displays that make the experience even richer.

As a visitor, my take is this: the Super Sites are hidden gems. They’re beautifully curated, often less crowded, and add an extra layer of depth to your visit if you have the time.

How Many Super Sites Are There?

At the moment, there are 7 Super Sites included in the Colosseum Archaeological Park:

  • Horrea Piperataria

  • Domus Tiberiana

  • House of Augustus

  • House of Livia

  • Aula Isiaca & Loggia Mattei

  • Santa Maria Antiqua

  • Palatine Museum (Lower Floor)

Are They Worth It?

That really depends on your travel style. Some people love them — especially history enthusiasts and curious travelers who enjoy going beyond the obvious landmarks. Others are happy to stick with just the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill.

That said, I can’t count how many frustrated faces I saw when visitors, unaware of what the Super Sites were or how ticket types mattered, were suddenly stopped at the entrance.

Bottom line: The Super Sites are worth it if you love hidden gems, want to go deeper into the Colosseum Archaeological Park, or simply prefer the freedom to explore without being turned away at a doorway that sparks your curiosity. They’re beautifully curated, often quieter than the main routes, and add unique stories you won’t find elsewhere.
